Managing these variables through the summer months is not complicated, but it does require a consistent maintenance routine.
How Does Summer Heat Affect Ag Tire Performance?
Summer heat affects ag tire performance in three compounding ways:
- Raises internal tire pressure above the cold-set baseline
- Accelerates rubber compound breakdown in the bead area and sidewall
- Increases rolling resistance during roading and transport
Internal tire temperature during heavy field work and road travel in summer heat can exceed the tire’s designed operating range if the machine is working hard on long haul cycles. Practically, it makes sense to schedule the heaviest roading and transport during cooler morning or early evening hours when ambient temperature reduces the heat load the tire must manage.
Moreover, the bead area and sidewall are the most heat-sensitive structural zones in a radial ag tire. Inspect both daily during summer operations. Cracking, surface checking, or irregular bulging in either zone is a signal that the tire is operating under thermal stress and warrants a closer inspection before the next shift.
Does Summer Affect Soil Compaction Risk?
Yes, and it is less obvious than it appears. Dry summer soil compacts differently than wet spring soil, but compaction risk does not disappear when the surface dries. High-speed transit and field prep operations on dry ground transmit load deeper into the soil profile than the same operation on moist ground, because dry soil transfers stress more efficiently than soil with moisture in the pore spaces.
Root growth restriction and reduced water infiltration from summer compaction affect yield in the following season, not just the current one. The damage is cumulative and not always visible at the surface.
VF (Very High Flexion) radial tires are the most effective tool for reducing summer compaction risk on high-horsepower equipment. By carrying full axle loads at inflation pressures below 15 PSI, VF tires create a larger, flatter contact patch that distributes weight across more soil surface area. Less force per square inch means shallower compaction depth even on dry, firm ground.
Why Does Tire Inflation Pressure Matter More in Summer?
Tire pressure and temperature have a direct relationship. For every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature increase, tire pressure rises approximately 1 to 2 PSI. A tire set correctly at 6:00 in the morning can be running 4 to 6 PSI over its target pressure by mid-afternoon on a hot summer day.’
Both extremes carry consequences that compound in summer heat.
- Under-inflation: Excessive sidewall flexing generates internal heat at a rate the tire cannot dissipate. In summer ambient conditions, this heat accumulates faster than in cooler months. The result is accelerated casing breakdown and shortened service life.
- Over-inflation: Reduces the contact patch, which concentrates ground pressure into a smaller area and increases both center tread wear and soil compaction below the tire. A smaller contact patch also reduces traction, which increases wheel slip and fuel consumption.
